Have you ever wanted to dab but don't know where to start? Read this guide for beginners. What is Dabbing? Dabbing is a form of concentrated cannabis consumption in which users inhale vapour through a special pipe or bong. The term ‘dabbing’ refers only to the extraction and consumption, not to the method by which it was extracted or consumed. A ‘dab’ refers to when someone extracts cannabis concentrate, much like the heady substances are extracted from plants during distillation, into a small amount of liquid that can then be consumed in one inhalation. This helps reduce the amount of time needed for smoking, while also increasing potency. Wait, dabbing sounds more like a process than a thing. Well, it is both of course. A dab is the result of the concentrate being heated so the plant matter at its core ‘bites’ off more of the plant than expected. What does this do to you? Your body has no idea how to process this concentrated form of cannabis, which means that you will feel high much faster with less tolerance. The high lasts longer with ~10-20% THC in cannabis concentrate vs 90-99% in cannabis flower. Why dab? One of the most popular reasons cited for dabbing is that it’s quick and efficient at delivery with little waste. When you dab, you’ll feel the effects in 2-7 minutes. By comparison, smoking flower takes 15-20 minutes on average. For high tolerance users, that can be up to an hour of waiting for the benefits to kick in. Dabbing also allows you to get high quickly without having to burn through more bud than necessary. While most people claim that their tolerance has increased since switching to concentrate, the majority of users have not noticed a difference in their ability to function during a session. Dabbing is a relatively new phenomenon and there is no definite science behind it. The most widely accepted theory is that it results from a much higher concentration of THC in the vapour than the bud you would normally smoke. What are the risks? Dabbing is very similar to vaping, but it comes with additional risks. The most important thing to know about dabbing is that it can be harmful if you don’t do it safely. Most of the risks come from taking too much of something too quickly, but if you take more than you think you should, even though it won’t cause death by overdose, your heart will still have more work to do than it is used to. First, you may experience paranoia or anxiety as you are transitioning from the flower to the concentrate. Paradoxically, this is probably one of the best reasons to use a vaporizer when dabbing. The vaporizer will mask the change in your body chemistry, making it much easier to control how much you’re taking in. As with any other cannabis consumption method that increases blood flow, dabbing can cause your heart rate to increase to an unhealthy level. Another important thing to be aware of is using a medical concentrate without also consuming cannabis oil which has been formulated for specific medical conditions in dispensaries or high-quality cannabis oil extracts at home. eccc085e13
